GT Motorsports was founded in 1988 by a group of Georgia Tech students seeking to expand their education beyond the classroom.  For over thirty years, the team has provided GT students with hands-on experience to complement their classroom skills. Since its inception, the team has built twenty-five different cars and traveled to Michigan, England and even Australia to compete.

GTMS is well-known for its success in competition both domestically and abroad. In both 2001 and 2002, the team took the car to England and competed in the Formula Student UK event and won 1st place both years. In 2003, the team secured a 4th place finish at Michigan and secured 1st place at the Australian Formula SAE event. GTMS most recent top 10 finish was at Michigan in 2009, finishing 8th out of 93 worldwide competitors.

In recent years the team has struggled to maintain its early success; unable to compete at the 2017 Michigan event, team members were tremendously disappointed, but not deterred. Instead, they found themselves with a unique opportunity to implement a pseudo two-year build cycle. The car intended for Michigan 2017 was instead taken to the Lincoln competition to gain valuable information by competing in tech inspection and the static events. The team received extremely valuable feedback from the judges that will aid in the development of an even more competitive car for Michigan 2018.This year, the primary focus will be the re-design and development of the current car, dubbed “43”, improving its performance, efficiency, and reliability for the upcoming competition.

Historically, GTMS follows a one-year build cycle with design completion in the fall and manufacturing in early spring, theoretically leaving ample time for testing and development. In actuality, the team often struggles to complete the car in time to perform adequate testing and validation, as was the case most recently in Michigan. Team leaders agree that refining the planning and organization structure is crucial to overcome this time constraint and critical to regain earlier momentum. While the final results have not been stellar as of late, the team continues to learn from its mistakes, undertake challenging projects and strives to introduce advanced technologies and improvements for every car it builds.
